The topical calcineurin inhibitors, pimecrolimus and tacrolimus, are anti-inflammatory therapies that are approved for the treatment of atopic eczema in certain people.10,11 These include those who are not able to use topical steroids or in whom topical steroids have not been effective. However, there are some differences between these treatments in how a doctor can prescribe them and when they can be used. Your doctor will also advise you how long to use this treatment.
Current guidelines recommend the use of topical corticosteroids first in children aged 12 and under, before using topical calcineurin inhibitors.4
