Are there different types of eczema?

There are several different types of eczema that may look different, occur in different places on the body, and affect certain age groups more often.

Different forms of eczema are typically present at different ages:1

  • In infancy, the first signs of eczema most often emerge on the cheeks and scalp. Scratching usually results in crusted erosions of the skin
  • During childhood, lesions typically involve the creases of the body (the flexures), nape of the neck and backs of the arms and legs
  • During adolescence and adulthood, thickened plaques can be found within body creases and on the head and neck
